What a fantastic way of looking at poetry! After reading this quote multiple times, I have come to understand the meaning behind it (or at least my interpretation of it). Looking at the first sentence of the quote, “Painting is silent poetry”, I found that what Simonides means is that paintings can tell a story although they use no words. The second sentence, “poetry is eloquent painting” to me, means that poetry is just as expressive as painting in the way that it can paint a picture in the readers mind. All in all, I feel that the comparison made between painting and poetry, is both interesting and accurate. The reason being that both are art forms that allow either the artist or poet to express him or herself.
This quote is quite a really thoughtful way of looking at both images and poetry. In a way, they're connected and, in another way, they're unique. Simonides pretty much states that poetry is as if you're creating a beautiful painting on an empty canvas whilst painting is if you're getting ready to write your first poem. Great quote and really fascinating as to its interpretation of it by the previous poster.
